Stern Trawler developed by SENER for China National Fisheries Corp.

During the final week of September, a meeting was held in Wuhan, China to examine the conceptual ship design developed by SENER and the China Ship Design & Development Centre (CSDDC). The examination consisted of an initial presentation of the project by SENER and CSDDC, after which a jury of experts in fishing and designing vessels of this type was assembled by the ship builders (CNFC) to verify its suitability. The design was accepted and described as modern, high tech, and environmentally friendly, while also being cost efficient and safe.

This project began two years ago with a project developed by SENER that made it possible to take on this contract with its advanced level of completion and research. A few specific characteristics were modified during the design stage in July to meet the latest standards specified in the June kick-off meeting. As for the ship's basic design, this is the first project where the basic design has been created with FORAN, thus considerably decreasing its subsequent detail design.

Description of the vessel

Main particulars of the vessel are the length of 82.5 m, width of 16 m and cargo bay capacity of 2,165 m3 net. The crew will be 29 sailors and 45 fishermen, while the maximum speed will be 13.5 knots. The ship is classified by DNV (+1A1 Stern Trawler Ice Class 1A* EO).

One of the more notable technical characteristics of this trawler's design is the ability to work with both pelagic and bottom fishing. Each type of fishing has its own particular fishing and fish handling procedures. The processing equipment for this type is in the main deck and consists of a series of sorting, freezing, and packaging belts, followed by a palletizer, all with a high level of automation. The number of people on board has been optimized by using a modern storage system in the cargo bay while the number of workers exposed to low temperatures is negligible. The ship's fishing deck has also been reinforced in the areas where the greatest quantities of fish will be brought in, to ensure that it will be able to handle extraordinary codend weights.

Another innovation introduced is the use of any kind of fish by converting any fish, that would otherwise by rejected, into fish meal through an automatic washing, grinding, and packaging process. On top of this, the ship has four RSW (refrigerated sea water) tanks, with a capacity of around 240 m3, making it possible to process up to 120 tons of fish per day from pelagic fishing.

In terms of propulsion, the trawler is propelled by a semi-fast eight cylinder PTO/PTI coupling that supplies 2,000 kW of electric power and has an axle with four fixed-jet turbines and a high-efficiency helm with a flap. In addition to this, it is equipped with two 1,000 kW fuel oil auxiliaries to boost this electrical power.

The new design also gives the ship the ability to fish in the southernmost waters of Antarctica, where the shipbuilder intends to conduct its activity. Its Ice Class 1A* classification reinforces the boat's ability from bow to stern to navigate waters with high concentrations of ice. Its bow and stem act as an ice-breaking knife (DNV knife). This design also has other particular features, such as a covered bow to prevent water from waves from entering the ship, and to facilitate access in extremely low temperatures.

As far as the ship's structure is concerned, it is built with common A-class steel, with sections of high tensile steel combined with features that are resistant to low temperatures. The entire structure of the bridge is made of aluminum. In addition, its stern gantry is designed with a single "leg" in order to facilitate the movement of the stern crane and to eliminate heavy weights, thus improving its stability.

Lastly, the ship is equipped to unload and restock with other boats on the high seas, thus multiplying its fishing efficiency.
